Dr. Gosar – hemp and CBD

What is CBD?

Our body is capable of producing its own cannabinoids, which transmit messages between cells. When the body is tired or under stress, this production can decrease. In such times, we can support it by introducing phytocannabinoids, which are found in hemp. CBD (cannabidiol) is a compound from the flowers of industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L. var. sativa) and is the most common cannabinoid alongside its relative, THC. Unlike THC, CBD is non-psychoactive and does not cause dizziness or a high. The advantage of hemp cannabinoids is that they bind to the same receptors as the cannabinoids produced by our own body – the body therefore recognizes them and accepts them as its own.

Full Spectrum, Broad Spectrum, or Isolate?

Full Spectrum

Full-spectrum products contain only natural extracts from industrial hemp, without any added CBD isolate or synthetic CBD. In addition to CBD, the natural extract contains a wide range of other cannabinoids, terpenes, and antioxidants that work synergistically (the so-called entourage effect) – the ingredients complement one another. Humanity has been consuming hemp in this form for millennia. At Dr. Gosar, you are also welcome to see all the production processes – from cultivation in the field to processing in the laboratory.

Broad Spectrum

Hemp products with a higher CBD content (more than 7%) have a 97–99.9% CBD isolate added to the natural extract. Since the isolate contains no THC, it can be added in almost any concentration – this is how products with 50% or more CBD are created, while still containing less than 0.2% THC.

CBD Isolate

CBD isolate is purified CBD (97–99.9%), of either natural or synthetic origin. It dissolves in oil and hemp extracts. In addition to CBD isolate, CBG, CBC, CBN, THC, and other cannabinoid isolates are also available on the market.

How to Identify Products with CBD Isolate or Synthetic CBD?

  • They offer products with more than 7% CBD – it is impossible to achieve higher concentrations purely through hemp extraction while keeping THC below 0.2%, unless using hemp varieties where CBG is the primary cannabinoid, as these plants produce very little THC.
  • The provider is usually not involved in hemp cultivation.
  • In laboratory analysis (e.g., Eurofins Erico Slovenia), almost exclusively cannabidiol (CBD) is present, while other cannabinoids (CBG, CBC, CBN…) are absent or present in very small amounts.

Drops can be dosed under the tongue (sublingually) and held for a few minutes before swallowing, or they can be ingested directly. Please check the recommended use and dosage in the description of each product and on the packaging. Start carefully, with a lower dose, and adjust it according to how you feel.

Position Statement: Regulation of Industrial Hemp Extracts

Author: dr. Borut Gosar, agronomist, biotechnologist, entrepreneur, innovator.

Hemp is a plant that humans have known and used for at least 12,000 years. Cannabis sativa is one of the most thoroughly studied plants in the world. In January 2019, the European Commission changed the entry for cannabinoids in the Novel Food Catalogue, defining industrial hemp extracts as novel foods, which require authorization before being placed on the market. This measure is all the more difficult to understand in light of the position of the World Health Organization (WHO), which assessed cannabinoids as safe and, in the same year, proposed exempting preparations with up to 0.2% THC from international control.

Individual EU countries react differently; the Slovenian regulations have been among the strictest. A sensible regulatory framework should ensure consumer protection and control over the content of natural CBD products, while preserving green jobs and a fair market. A ban instead of regulation can lead to unregulated sales and financial outflow abroad, while punishing precisely those growers who operate transparently and responsibly.
