Purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea L.) is one of the best-known medicinal plants. Its quality largely depends on how it is cultivated and processed – this was precisely the central question of the doctoral research conducted by the founder of Dr. Gosar.
Expertise from first-hand experience
The founder of the company, Dr. Borut Gosar, worked as a young researcher at the Biotechnical Faculty in Ljubljana from 2005 to 2010, where he worked in the field of medicinal plant biotechnology – including the analysis of active substances (HPLC), in vitro immunological tests and statistical data processing. In 2010, he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation entitled “The influence of technological factors on the quality and cultivation possibilities of purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea L.)”. He is therefore the only person in Slovenia to have obtained a doctorate specifically focused on this plant.
Why cultivation is crucial for quality
The content of active substances in purple coneflower is not constant – it is influenced by the choice of plant part, the timing and method of harvesting, drying and the processing procedure. These very »technological factors« were examined in the doctoral research. The result: two seemingly identical purple coneflower products can differ considerably in composition. That is why at Dr. Gosar we manage the entire process ourselves – from cultivation to extract.
